What awaits SYRIZA after the victory of S. Kasselakis

Stefanos Kasselakis is the new president of SYRIZA, and now everyone is wondering: will the party maintain its unity, or will part of it leave in search of “other paths”?

Since the difference of 12 points (56% versus 44%) is large, the possibility of intra-party opposition is limited. The undisputed leader is S. Kasselakis.

There will not be an immediate split, but there will be isolated resignations and departures, as happened this morning with Giannis Tsaknakis. In fact, this person said that he did not want to be “in a party with Kasselakis as president for even an hour.”

Efforts will be made behind the scenes to balance the situation, at least until the convention. Publicly, everyone will talk about the mandate of 150,000 voters and the unity of SYRIZA.

There is a serious challenge to reunite Syriza’s two “worlds”, but judging by the results of the double national elections and yesterday’s internal party elections, the Tsipras-Kasselakis camp would prefer the rest of the party to be with them. But they can do without them. The opposite option is not suitable. The opposition camp is condemned by society, which no longer cares about the ideas it preaches.

In fact, if the convention does not take place in November or, at the latest, in December, then one should not even rule out several refusals to participate in it. In addition, a close associate of Stefanos Kasselakis, namely E. Apostolakis, has already warned that those who do not want to see him as president “have other ways.”

Supporters of Ahcioglu and especially of the Umbrella (Ομπρέλα) will not agree that the congress will be held later and even in the spring, since it will turn into an election fiesta before the European elections and will not become, as they themselves wish, a field of self-criticism for the double electoral defeat and search for a new identity for SYRIZA.

Only here they make an important mistake: S. Kasselakis cannot engage in self-criticism about the election results, since before that he did not play any significant role in the party. On the contrary, the rest of his party colleagues are themselves in disgrace, since they were, in fact, rejected by voters.

The departure of the left wing is very suitable for Stefanos Kasselakis from a political point of view, since he will be able to turn SYRIZA into a center-left party, far from the beliefs of the radical left. He strives for this and, contrary to the opinion of many, will turn, first of all, not against the “New Democracy” of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, but against PASOK.

Nikos Androulakis shows that he does not have the communicative charisma of Andreas Papandreou to make the party grow even more, and that it is not growing… it is getting smaller.

It is likely that SYRIZA will change its name and logo to enter a new era. The election of Stefanos Kasselakis also brings to the surface a new feature. From now on, SYRIZA will not be the party of collectivism, but the party of the individual. It will be the party of diversity and will express the welfare of citizens as its main goal (at least that is what its new leader claims), and therefore will be able to gather votes from everywhere.

There are no more ideologies and political visions as in the past, because the difficulty of survival for citizens has simply increased dramatically. Therefore, Stefanos Kasselakis is now “selling” to the electorate what they themselves want.

One more point is worth noting. In an era dominated by Instagram and TikTok, as well as selfies, Kasselakis has an advantage initially over Androulakis, and strategically over Mitsotakis. Someone will say: is this good? No, but it is what it is.

One can only guess who will continue his work. Instead of congratulating Kasselakis on his victory, Euclid Tsakalotos chose to tell him: “The left is here. They are used to difficult times. With the legacy of our victories, ideas and values, we will always continue the movement of the left.”

In short, he wants to say that the new president is a foreign body in the party of the left. That is why it will not remain a leftist party for long, but will turn into a kind of clone of the US Democratic Party, which, although it is leftist, has nothing to do with what is meant by the term left-wing party.
