A flock of dozens of flamingos appeared today, Saturday, on a marshy area of the beach between Nafplio and Nea Kios in Argolis.
Flamingos have begun their autumn migration and are moving towards Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
The name flamingo comes from the Portuguese or Spanish word “flamengo”, which means “one who is the color of flame.”
The Greek word “palmopteros” has a similar meaning, meaning “one with blood-red wings.”
Flamingos feed mainly on shrimp, algae and aquatic plants. Their wings are various shades of orange and pink.
This is explained by the presence of pigments containing carotenoids in the foods they consume.
