Poseidon Fountain in Florence damaged by German selfie lover

A German tourist will have to pay a €5,000 fine for damaging a statue of the Poseidon Fountain in Florence, Italy.

Wanting to take a selfie, a 22-year-old German citizen climbed onto the statue, after which, at first glance, it did not suffer. However, the restorers noticed that a small piece came off the leg of Poseidon’s horse, which is not surprising, given the “activity” of the tourist. The Berliner decided to climb over the edge of the pool and … “reunite” with the sculptural group. Trying to come back from a selfie that was successful in his opinion and too expensive according to the Italian authorities, he put his foot on the limb of a horse that could not support his weight.

Incident like writes www.newsbeast.gr took place last night, September 4, in the center of Florence. The young man hurried to retreat with his friends, but … the alarm went off.

Surveillance cameras helped to identify him, the German tourist is accused of destroying the monument and damaging the country’s cultural heritage. Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano said:

“The person responsible for this act completely lacks the sense of respect for culture and beauty that should characterize anyone who decides to visit our country. Incidents like this must stop, and very soon the Parliament of Rome will approve a law that will toughen the prescribed penalties.”

The problem is that this is far from the only such incident. Two tourists, also from Germany, spray-painted a football slogan on a 16th-century Florentine monument on August 24. The seven large letters and numbers representing the German football team 1860 Munich were painted in black paint on the outer columns of the Vasari corridor overlooking the Arno river. This summer, the Colosseum fell victim to vandalism three times: tourists tried to carve their initials on the monument.

There are enough vandals in Greece. Earlier, our publication talked about how unknown attackers decapitated the statue sculptor Antonios Sokhos, located in Evangelismos Park. And two years ago, graffiti created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution by an artist with the pseudonym Evrytos were defiled unknown persons. The mayor of the district posted this information on social networks.
