Cyclone Daniel rolled across Greece: if Athens and the surrounding area was slightly sprinkled with rain, then in Magnesia and the Sporades, residents have serious problems.
So far, one person has died in Volos, who was crushed by a wall that collapsed due to heavy rain. Another resident of Volos went missing after his car was swept away by the current.

Sea tornado near Volos
“Extreme Event and Unprecedented Rainfall”
Professor of the Department of Dynamic Tectonics, Applied Geology and Disaster Management, OASP President Efthymios Lekkas talks about an extreme event and unprecedented rainfall in a vast area of eastern Thessaly.
“The unprecedented amount of precipitation that fell over a wide area of eastern Thessaly is an extreme phenomenon,” says the professor. According to him, especially in Pelion, Cyclone Daniel “brought” more than 500 mm of precipitation in a limited period of time at an extremely high speed.

“Precipitation numbers, although unprecedented, are completely natural, based on new data from the climate crisis on the one hand, and on the other, due to the proximity to the sea and the transverse-longitudinal location of Pelion to the front of the system’s movement,” he notes. that the risk was extremely high and extreme, but the first picture of the impact on infrastructure in the Pelion area is positive.”
Lekkas emphasizes that “the infrastructure in the Pelion mountain region is particularly resilient to such weather events, given that after the rains of 2017 and the resulting disasters, the Thessaly region made a systematic effort to build infrastructure based on new data, which contributed to the increase in the sustainability of projects.”
At the same time, he emphasizes that “a highly uncertain risk factor for floods, however, remains the proportion of solid particles, that is, the amount of sediment carried by rain and storm water, which in Pelion and on a wider scale is significant due to the delicate nature of the geological formations and especially the shale formations that occur in the region.”

It began to rain in some parts of Attica, but it ended just as quickly. “The Attica prefecture also needs attention because we see the wind shifting to the east/southeast. This is a fairly prevailing wind for the Attica region. It is usually accompanied by heavy rainfall, so we must be vigilant, the air temperature should not exceed 28 degrees in end of the day,” meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis said today.
