New ID cards will be issued from September 25

In Greece, from September 25, the replacement of old-style identity cards (tautotit) with new ones with enhanced protection will begin.

The Minister for the Protection of Citizens, speaking on television on 31.8.2023, stated the following: “On September 25, 2023, the process of issuing new identity cards will begin, and two years later the old ones will no longer be valid.

New identity cards are a reality that will change the lives of citizens, making them safer.

The issuance process takes place in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Governance. According to the plan, a platform will be launched where a citizen can apply through gov.gr. It will be possible to get a tavtotita at 370 points (departments or police stations) located throughout Greece.

The citizen will apply on the platform, then they will receive a notification of the time and place (the nearest police station authorized to issue documents). The cost of the new police license will be 10 euros and will be valid for 10 years.

Credit card-sized ID will contain identification information: name, date of birth, place of birth, nationality, identification number.

Instead of a fingerprint, the new ID will use an electronic chip. (Which is one of the topics that caused a public outcry, since some believe that this is a “conspiracy against the citizens”, and that “any trickster will be able to access confidential personal data”).

Such speculation is by no means true. The level of protection against counterfeiting and the preservation of personal data is high (much higher than in old-style tautotites). Moreover, there is no possibility geospatial identification, and theories about tracking (receiving) personal data by third parties are “complete nonsense”.

The queues for getting the old-style tautite are meaningless, because two years later, in August 2026, they will cease to be valid in accordance with European law“.
