The UK will expedite the start of preventive coronavirus and influenza vaccinations in the fall after a sub-variant of SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.86 with multiple mutations was discovered.
Scientists suggest that this option is unlikely to cause a catastrophic wave of serious illness or death. They take into account the immune protection created around the world, thanks to vaccinations and past diseases. However, the British Ministry of Health said that due to this sub-option, annual vaccination programs for vulnerable populations will start several weeks earlier than planned. Maria Cofield, Deputy Minister of Health, says:
“While our lead scientists gather more information on option BA.2.86, it makes sense to speed up vaccination programs.”
SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.86 was first identified in the UK on August 18, that is, two weeks ago. Vaccination will begin on September 11th. Those in nursing homes and those in high-risk groups will be the first to receive the vaccine.
This option is not yet classified as “of concern” in the UK and the Department of Health has assured that its instructions to the general public will not change.
SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.86 was first detected in Denmark on July 24th. It has since been identified in other patients in several countries, writes CNN Greece.
