The social assistance program for the inhabitants of Greece, called the “School Basket”, will come into force next Wednesday, August 30, and will last until October 3, 2023. At the same time, changes are also expected in the “Family Basket”.
In his recent statements on the subject, Kostas Skrekas, the Minister of Development, among other things, said: “In addition to the establishment of a ‘marginal ceiling’, for the first time, the ‘School Basket’ is being created, an initiative in which both supermarkets and large chains selling significant volumes of school supplies.
The government is fully aware of the difficulties faced by the most vulnerable segments of the population, we are implementing appropriate social assistance programs. For our part, we will use every opportunity to support citizens for as long as it takes.” The list includes nine school supplies that form the basis of the “basket”. In particular, these are:
- School bags.
- Pencil cases.
- Notebooks (notebooks).
- Wooden or mechanical pencils.
- Colored markers (felt-tip pens).
- Pens.
- Erasers.

It is noted that, in addition to supermarkets, “baskets” with school supplies will also be available in chains of stores selling toys and office equipment that sell satchels (school bags), books and stationery.
At the same time, the “Family Basket” program is maintained, from which it was decided to remove goods that did not enjoy the expected demand, for example: cocoa, chocolate and antiseptics.
At the same time, it becomes mandatory to add at least one branded product to certain core categories (e.g. dairy, legumes, rice, pasta).
It is also planned to create a second point of special promotion and sale of products from the category of goods “Family and school basket” in the sales area (the area near the cash desks). This means that, where possible, there will be a dedicated display case for most of the products included in the shopping cart.
