A new site is being launched in Russia designed to censor YouTube content – a “compromise” option instead of a complete block, users and experts say.
This is reported by Russian Telegram channels, referring to a published official appeal to employees to test the “YouTube access service”. It is understood that the site ytonline.ru created by Rostelecom will be able to filter content centrally, writes Edition “Country”.
Mikhail Klimarev, executive director of the Internet Defense Society, suggests that this is similar to YouTube’s censorship filter test:
“Direct access to YouTube will be blocked, but it will be possible to watch videos from it through the” gasket “- this is the portal of Rostelecom. But not all of them: cats and cooking – please, but seditious, from the point of view of power, content he will not miss.”
The expert claims that after a political decision is made, it will take about two months to launch such a filter. On Friday, the site ytonline.ru was available to all Russian users, but now it has already been closed.
Earlier media reported that Russia intends to completely block YouTube. However, the idea caused a mixed reaction among the citizens of the country, so the authorities are probably now trying to introduce a “compromise” option: so that the web service is not completely disabled, and the possibility of censoring it is obtained.
