Corinth: the incomparable lake Vouliagmeni from a bird’s eye view

Lake Vouliagmeni (not to be confused with the one of the same name in Athens!) is a reservoir located 16 kilometers northwest of Loutraki, in close proximity to the archaeological site of Heraion and the settlement of Perachora.

It has a maximum length of 2 km and a width of about 1 km, and the depth of the reservoir is about 40 meters. Unlike the coastline of Loutraki, there is a sandy beach here.

It communicates with the waters of the Gulf of Corinth by a very narrow channel, the width of which does not exceed 6 meters. The lake is of natural origin. It is believed that it appeared as a result of geological phenomena – the underground layers of the bowels sagged during the earthquake, and a capacious “bowl” was formed, into which sea water poured.

The water in the lake is not at all fresh, as one might assume, however, it is not as salty as in the sea, since there are many fresh springs at its bottom. And since it is connected by a canal to the sea, its waters are renewed approximately every six hours due to the phenomenon of ebb and flow.

It is certainly one of the most beautiful and special beaches of the Peloponnese, which is why there are several tourist bases and holiday homes on its shore. In addition, the waters of the lake are warm until late autumn, since the lake is shallow and the water in it warms up well.
