No more paper tickets: pay by card or mobile phone

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport said that the means of payment for travel in public urban transport will be a plastic bank card or digital (in the form of a program in a mobile phone).

Christos Staikouras presented his plan for urban transport and when we will see “green” buses in Athens and Thessaloniki.

At the same time, the minister announced that they “immediately start introducing the use of bank cards and mobile phones in public transport. The payment instrument will be the bank card itself, either plastic or integrated into a mobile phone. As Mr. Staikouras noted: “Strengthening the public transport system is a key priority for our ministry. The goal is to increase the share of public transport use over other modes of transport in order to create convenience for citizens and reduce energy consumption.

For this it is necessary not only to increase transport work, but also to improve the quality of the service provided. An important step in this direction is purchase of new zero-emission buseswhich is in full swing. The first new buses are expected to arrive in the parks of the two cities in early 2024. The remaining parts of the tender for 400 buses are currently being finalized. The second stage of the purchase of another 650 buses is being prepared. Also, we are actively promoting the project for the construction of the 4th metro line, a landmark project for the city of Athens, and we are completing the construction of the metro in Thessaloniki.”
