Heat “Cleon”: how street markets will work

Greece lives in the rhythm of intense heat, the temperature in some areas reaches +40°C, and, as expected, the mercury column will exceed this limit in the coming days.

Authorities and organizations for the protection of citizens have been put on “combat readiness”. EMY, the Ministry of Health, ISA and other agencies have issued special information bulletins. From every receiver, experts talk all the time about how to protect yourself and loved ones in these extreme conditions.

The Ministry of Labor strongly recommends that employers take the necessary technical and organizational measures in accordance with applicable laws, as well as reduce employment and / or stop working during peak hours (12.00-17.00), if deemed necessary. Depending on the circumstances, it is necessary to avoid the phenomenon of heat stroke, which may occur to workers in conditions of extreme heat. Recall that in 2017, an employee of public utilities died in Greece, which became a real tragedy that struck the society.

In particular, a municipal worker, an elderly woman, for two days worked full shifts in 43-degree heat. She died from overwork at work. The tragedy caused a public outcry. After that, the authorities told employers to “be more careful” about the work of employees when it’s hot outside.

As for street markets, they will operate as usual all day, taking all necessary measures to protect consumers and sellers. According to the official statement, after appropriate consultation of the President of the Panhellenic Federation of Professional Market Vendors Associations (POSPLA), Dimitris Mouliatou, with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, all consumers are advised to visit the markets in the morning hours in order not to be exposed to the extreme temperatures expected in the midday hours.
