A boat sank in the waters between Piraeus and Aegina (video)

A speedboat carrying 8 passengers sank yesterday in the sea between Piraeus and Aegina. The Coast Guard came to the rescue.

All of the ship’s passengers were rescued and a Coast Guard patrol boat brought them safely to Zeas Marina in Piraeus in a satisfactory condition. The ship under the Greek flag sank under unclear circumstances. At the scene, in addition to the coast guard, three vessels arrived EKΣEΔ, writes newsbeast.gr. The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the 5th port department Zeas of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus. The Coast Guard message says:

The port authorities of Piraeus and Aegina were informed early this morning by the Coast Guard Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center – Hellenic Coast Guard of an incident with a Greek flagged speedboat with 8 passengers (5 adults and 3 minors) in the sea area between Piraeus and Aegina. With the coordination of Ε.Κ.Σ.Ε.Δ./Λ.Σ-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ., two patrol boats Λ.Σ.-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ., as well as the ship Ε/Π-Τ/Ρ “ΓΙΩΡΓΗΣ ​​ΙΙ” Ν .Π. 9356 found the above speedboat half-submerged and wrecked. The passengers were subsequently picked up by the patrol boat Ε/Π-Τ/Ρ “ΓΙΩΡΓΗΣ ​​ΙΙ” and transported safely to the Zeya pier in Piraeus. This speedboat, with the help of the vessel “GIORGIS II”, entered the port of Leontio in the village of Aegina (Λεοντίου ν. Αίγινας) and subsequently was raised ashore. As a result of the incident, no one was injured, no pollution of the marine environment was observed, and the navigation of the above speedboat was prohibited until a certificate of validity was presented.
