13-year-old Athens boy rushed to Italy for double transplant

A double transplant – liver and kidney – was successfully carried out in Italy for a teenager from Athens, now the boy is recovering.

The child was on a waiting list for an organ transplant, and an urgent message came from the Bambino Gesu Transplant Center (Μεταμοσχευτικό Κέντρο Bambino Gesu) in Rome of a matched donor.

Athenian specialists reacted immediately. Greek therapists from the Children’s Hospital “Aglaia Kyriakou” (“Αγλαΐα Κυριακού”) contacted the Italian doctors and made a request to the Αεροδιακομιδές του ΕΚΑΒ. The ΕΚΑΒ also reacted immediately in cooperation with the General Staff of Aviation (Γενικό Επιτελείο Αεροπορίας). Three hours later the plane was in the air and headed for Rome.

A thirteen-year-old teenager successfully underwent a complex operation and is recovering. Before him, many pediatric patients from Greece had already undergone transplantation at Bambino Gesu. The interstate agreement between Greece and Italy on transplantation helps in this with the aim of optimal and timely treatment of special cases, writes newsbeast.gr. Of particular note is the impeccable work of αεροδιακομιδές του ΕΚΑΒ, which allows us to deliver a small patient from Greece to Italy as soon as possible.
