P.Kammenos: "Tsipras set up a trap to sign the Prespa Agreement"

Former government partner of Alexis Tsipras and former defense minister Panos Kammenosmade important revelations regarding the negotiations of the Greek government with creditors, the 2015 referendum and Prespa Agreementto whom Greece ceded historical rights to “Macedonia”.

“They set a trap for Tsipras with the Prespa Agreement, promising him Nobel Peace Prize as a gift,” he said. Regarding the departure of Alexis Tsipras from politics and whether he will return, Panos Kamenos said that if he does, then, of course, with another party, and not with SYRIZA.

Speaking at the show “Arena”, Panos Kammenos “spoke” after three years of “silence”.

The former president of Independent Greeks (Ανεξαρτήτων Ελλήνων), speaking on ANT1 on Wednesday evening, spoke about what happened after the 2015 referendum, when the then finance minister also recommended that Greece accept Germany’s and Wolfgang Schäuble’s offer to withdraw Greece from the Eurozone.

Speaking of the day when the infamous 17-hour talks on Lake Prespa took place for many Greeks, a week after the Greek referendum, Panos Kammenos recounted how, on the night of July 12, 2015, US President Barack Obama called French President Francois Hollande to he pressured Tsipras to sign an agreement, which he did.

“In 2015, Greece decided to change the geopolitical situation and conclude an agreement with the United States”he said, adding that he handed over to the US: the expansion of the base of the Court will continue, the port of Alexandroupoli will be handed over to the US and a number of other actions will be taken to ensure that Greece becomes a key American ally in the Mediterranean instead of Turkey.

Kammenos also told how in Brussels he met with Alexis Tsipras and Janis Varoufakis before the Eurogroup meeting on the 24th floor of a hotel. There, he heard Varoufakis’s opinion on leaving the eurozone, after which he decided to immediately call the United States. According to Kammenos, he called US Secretary of State Ms. Nuland, as Secretary of National Defense, to have the White House mediate in the negotiations. On the same evening, Barack Obama, according to Kammenos, called Alexis Tsipras:

“Indeed, Barack Obama spoke on the phone with Alexis Tsipras. Then Obama, along with French President Francois Hollande, mediated, and that is how the agreement on the third memorandum was concluded. The agreement was concluded because Greece turned to the United States. This is the truth that needs to be told. I didn’t speak for three years because I didn’t want to get involved in the Greek political scene. Since Alexis Tsipras has decided to leave, the Greek people must know the truth.”.

Speaking about the Prespa Treaty, he said that this agreement was a trap set for Alexis Tsipras “with the Nobel Peace Prize as a gift.”

“Our cooperation with Alexis Tsipras was honest until the conclusion Prespansky agreements. In 2014, we entered into an agreement under which the government will not open the issue of Skopje. On Tsipras did not press the leftto enter into this agreement. He was pressured by Germany and Democrats in the US. We agreed with the Americans that there will be trilateral military cooperation, but not about the name of the neighboring country. But all this was cancelled. The Prespa Agreement was a trap set by the Germans for Tsipras with the Nobel Peace Prize as a gift!”

He continued that “one evening at the winter residence of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic” he participated in the discussion in which it was the Germans who insisted that an agreement with Skopje must be reached.

“I told Alexis Tsipras then that if this happens, I will leave the government,” Kamenos said.

Referring to Alexis Tsipras’ statements that ANEL (Ανεξαρτήτων Ελλήνων) is a “necessary evil”, he said that with these statements he probably lost the voters who would have supported him in the last elections.

“Our cooperation was excellent, the only stain on it was the Prespa Agreement”– he said.

Commenting on the position of Alexis Tsipras, he said that he had suffered huge political damage because he pursued policies such as agreements with the US, which he did not support when they were continued by the New Democracy government. At the same time, he mockingly commented on the choice of Tsipras, saying that he had failed to change SYRIZA and turn it into the main centre-left party. “You don’t change parties with demolition materials, he took the fled [имеется ввиду фактический развал ПАСОК в 2015 году] politicians from PASOK”– he said.

Kammenos went on to assert that SYRIZA was finished and that Kyriakos Mitsotakis had won the biggest win over the left since 1974. He noted that it was the policies of Tsipras that led SYRIZA to the defeat in the elections and, ultimately, to his resignation. Commenting on the question of whether Tsipras would return, he said that, as far as he knew, he would not take such a step, but even if he did, it would not be in SYRIZA.

Finally, answering a question, he stressed that he would not return to politics. “Politics is over for me, I was a member of parliament for 28 years, a minister for 7 years, there are younger people who can do this job. If I can help with my contribution, I will do it, but I have retired. We have set a goal take the country out of the memorandums, and we took it out”– Panos Kammenos said at the end of the conversation.
