“Family Basket”: 96.35% of products remain stable or declining in price

As noted in the message of the Ministry of Development of Greece, for 96.35% of the goods in the “Family Basket” prices remain stable or decrease in the 36th week of the implementation of the measure to help vulnerable households in the fight against inflation.

From the list of 1206 goods and products:

  • 44 items (3.65%) showed an increase in prices,
  • 42 (3.48%) showed a decrease,
  • in 1120 (92.87%) the cost remained stable.

The measure, the government says, appears to be moving in the right direction. Despite the fact that prices remain stable or even fall. “The supermarket chains have done a great job,” says Mr. Doxaras, founder and CEO of Warply (which runs e-katanalotis.gr). Supermarket chains are constantly adjusting their product listings in an attempt to keep prices stable or even lower than their original prices.

Nevertheless, the reaction of the management of the organized retail food market (including supermarket owners) to the extension of the “Family Basket” measure can be characterized as negative. Industry leaders, who wish to remain anonymous, have made no secret of their disappointment at the continuation of the measure for six months, saying that it exhausted its momentum, and is also ineffective in the fight against inflation.

Businessmen claim that the vast majority of consumers have long since turned their backs on this initiative due to the limited variety and choice of products. “Brands that could become barkers were never included in the ‘basket’, which was usually limited to private label products,” they note.
