The Washington Post reports that intelligence agencies are investigating a suspicious substance that led to a brief evacuation when it was discovered Sunday night inside the White House. The substance, which was a white powder, tested positive for cocaine, according to the conclusion of a preliminary test, according to an officer familiar with the investigation and a record of the dispatcher of the Washington fire brigade who responded to the incident.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the substance is undergoing further testing to determine what it is. Meanwhile, the authorities are investigating how it got into the White House. However, the Washington Fire Department determined that the substance did not pose a threat.
The discovery of the substance put agencies on high alert and an emergency evacuation was carried out in the area. President Biden, according to Guglielmi, was not at the White House at the time. An “investigation into the cause and manner” of the substance entering the White House is already underway.
Gulielmi declined to provide details of where exactly the substance was found or how it was packaged. He limited himself to what he said – the substance was discovered by members of the Secret Service unit, who were conducting routine patrols of the building.
While the unit was on duty at 8:49 p.m., a firefighter from the Washington Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit radioed the test results: “We have a yellow bag labeled cocaine hydrochloride. Vito Maggiolo, spokesman for the Washington Fire Department, limited stating that his agency “provided support to the Secret Service in its investigation.”
