The far-right “Spartans” (“Σπαρτιατών”), a party previously unknown to the general public, has entered the new parliament, which will be formed after the June 25 elections.
Open support for the party was expressed by Ilias Cassidiaris, former vice-president of the Golden Dawn party (Chrisi Avgi), who was convicted along with the leadership of the party under the article “creating a criminal organization.”
“Spartans” won 4.7% of the vote on Sunday and received 12 deputies in the new parliament. It is noteworthy that 21.2% of the prisoners of the maximum security prison Domokos, where Cassidiaris is behind bars, voted for the Spartans.
Immediately after the announcement of the results late on Sunday evening, party leader Vassilis Stygas stated publicly:“I thank Ilias Kasidiaris for being the fuel that gave us the momentum to achieve this result.”
Undoubtedly, it was the support of Cassidiaris that influenced not only the party, but also the name of its leader, which until Sunday was unknown to the general public. It was also unclear where the headquarters of the party and the content of the party program were located.
According to the data, the party, with the support of Kasidiaris, “stole” 20.3% of the votes from the nationalist party “Greek Solution” (Ελληνική Λύση), 17% from the Orthodox-religious party “Victory” (“Νίκη”), 11.7% from the “Kurs freedom” (Πλεύση Ελευθερίας), 1.7% for ND and 30% for other parties.
What is “Σπαρτιατών”
“The Spartans party represents the ideals and values of Hellenism. The Spartans came to unite, not divide,” Stygas said in statements Sunday, stressing that the anti-systemic vote won. “The National Party, the national voice will be in parliament again after a long time,” he added, and thanked the party’s supporters for “the hard work of three weeks.”
It should be noted that the party was practically created between the two national elections on May 21 and June 25. The Supreme Court suspended the party from participating in the May elections, as some candidates were also introduced to the parliament by the “Greeks” – the Greeks.
Vasilis Stigas was a member of the “Political Spring” (Πολιτικής Άνοιξης) of Antonis Samaras, and in 2000 he joined the People’s Orthodox Association LAOS. After leaving LAOS it remained without formation for many years until it joined the Radical National Rally (Ριζοσπαστικό Εθνικό Συναγερμό) in the 2010s. In 2017, he founded the nationalist political party Spartans. In 2019, he was a candidate for the European Parliament from the Center Union.
In today’s elections, he took part, securing the support of the Ilias of Kasidiaris, who, after the Supreme Court blocks the combination of independent candidates “Greeks for the Homeland and Freedom” (“έλληνες για την παι την ελευθερία”), in which members of the National Party – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – the Greeks – (Εθνικού Κόμματος – Έλληνες), declared that he would support this party and urged his audience to support the Spartans.
He has views against the LGBTQ+ community and opposes the Prespes Agreement. Stygas calls the immigrants “illegal invaders who settled in Greece” and speaks of an “ethnic change in the population”.
When was the “Spartans” party “born”
The party officially appeared in 2017, with the filing of the founding declaration of the new formation in the Supreme Court, and at first glance it is immediately clear that this is a party with far-right, ultra-conservative and ultra-nationalist rhetoric.
On their updated website (which, it should be noted, was unstable a month ago), they describe the game as follows:
