Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites become visible in the sky over Attica

Elon Musk’s Starlink SpaceX satellites appeared in the night sky over Voula on Friday evening, June 23rd.

The Newsbomb.gr lens captured satellites in low Earth orbit. After the residents of some countries, frightened by incomprehensible lights in the sky, said they had seen a UFO, Musk reassured everyone – it’s just satellite system for providing broadband Internet connection Starlink.

Starlink provides internet services through an extensive network of satellites. It is designed for people who live in remote areas and do not have fast internet.

Starlink satellites are placed in low Earth orbit to ensure the fastest connection between the satellites and the earth.

However, many such satellites are required to completely cover the planet. According to official data, as of April 20, 2023, SpaceX launched 4,236 Starlink satellites into orbit during its 81 Falcon 9 launches:

  • 3353 satellites are in working orbits.
  • 46 satellites in reserve, close to operational orbit.
  • 224 satellites are in parking orbits.
  • 267 satellites in the process of ascending or descending orbit, changing orbital plane or moving to a new position.
  • 36 satellites do not maneuver for a long time and slowly descend under the influence of residual atmospheric drag.
  • 310 satellites have been deorbited (60 of them are the first batch of version 0.9 test vehicles launched, and 38 were lost due to a geomagnetic storm).

In September 2022, a map was published on the company’s official website showing in which countries it is possible to connect to the Starlink network, in which it is expected later, and in which countries it will not be possible. Among those where the connection to Starlink will not be available are:

  • Russia
  • Afghanistan
  • Belarus
  • Venezuela
  • Iran
  • Cuba
  • China
  • North Korea
  • Syria.

In Greece, Ilona Mask’s high-speed Internet was talked about back in 2020. In particular, as written “Athenian News”in 2021, a high-speed Internet supply system was to be implemented in Greece for those who will use the satellites of the SpaceLink program of the SpaceX company of the American tycoon Elon Musk.

According to moneyreview.gr, the project leaders have cleared the project with the National Telecommunications and Postal Commission (EETT), and with the Ministry of Digital Government in order to obtain the necessary licensing. Starlink’s entry into the internet connectivity market was expected to cause a “storm” in the Greek telecommunications market. Communication will cost a little more, by about 20%, but it will provide 100% coverage of the territory of Greece and promises a speed of 150 Mbps.
