The Guardian says that the Russian speech that is heard all over Poland “is starting to cause problems.”
Increasingly, Russian speech is heard on the streets of the Polish capital – Ukrainians and Belarusians became the reason for this. Edition notes:
“To date, Warsaw has become perhaps the most Russian-speaking city outside the countries that were previously part of the Soviet Union.”
Russian-speaking Ukrainians and Belarusians “are the most visible linguistic minority.” Most refugees from Ukraine arrived in Poland from the east of the country, where the Russian language prevails. And earlier, tens of thousands of Belarusians, also mostly Russian speakers, moved to escape repression after the protests in 2020.
Ukrainians who speak Russian cause a negative attitude among some Poles. Miroslav Skurka, President of the Union of Ukrainians in Poland, says:
“Our organization has received numerous calls from Poles who wanted to help but were concerned to learn that the Ukrainians they were helping continued to speak Russian.”
Skurka cites the results of a poll conducted in the spring, which showed that the attitude of Poles towards Ukrainians in the country is gradually becoming “less and less positive.” The main reason for this is that the majority of Ukrainians in Poland speak Russian. He notes:
“No one has a problem with Belarusians who speak Russian, but when it comes to Ukrainians, people wonder if this is indicative of political preferences.”
