In the Gulf of Naples, Italian special forces neutralized migrants who tried to hijack a merchant ship.
Fifteen people hid on board and attempted to hijack a Turkish ship bound for France by attacking the crew. Some migrants were armed.
Having received a distress signal from the captain, a special unit of the Italian Navy came to the rescue. Patrol boats blocked the ship, and special forces boarded from helicopters. All illegal immigrants are neutralized and detained. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto tweeted:
“The hijackers have been captured. All ended well. Congratulations to the guys from the San Marco Battalion, who completed an excellent joint operation. Great job!”
The incident was qualified as piracy.
