Party leader "Greek environmentalists" looking for his only voter to treat him to dinner

Demosthenis Vergis, founder of the Greek Ecologists, was surprised to learn that a single voter had voted for his party and invited him to dinner.

His party, one of 36 parties and unions contesting Sunday’s elections, ran for financial reasons only in the A district of Athens.

“In order to participate in the entire territory, you need 150,000 euros, money that I no longer had the desire to spend. Therefore, my wife and I paid 300 euros to participate, but only in Athens A district,” he explained.

As an environmentalist, the president of Greek environmentalists hopes that at some point the vote will be held electronically. “For many years I have been protesting a lot about the destruction of the environment, which is expressed in thousands of trees cut down to make paper for ballots and posters. Elections should be held electronically, which only Kyriakos Mitsotakis can achieve, because he promotes and believes in green development,” added Vergis.

Election observers expressed surprise that the party did not win a second vote, given that the president’s wife, Svetlana Lisagor Vergis, was also a candidate in the same constituency.

The result was the worst for Vergis in the 15 elections he has contested unsuccessfully since 1993. His party, once described as a “joke” by a government minister, should not be confused with the Green Ecologists party, which garnered more than 35,000 votes on Sunday, winning 0.6%.
