Russian Ambassador on Russophobia in Greece

In an interview with Parlamentskaya Gazeta, Andrey Maslov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation, stated that there was no harassment of Russian citizens in Greece.

The diplomat noted that at the everyday level, Russian citizens do not face negative attitudes towards themselves or any kind of harassment, the attitude towards them remains benevolent. However, he noted that isolated cases occurred.

For example, a massive anti-Russian campaign began in the local media after the start of a special operation in Ukraine. There were also cases of attacks by Ukrainian citizens on Russians, blocking bank accounts of Russian citizens in local banks. However, the ambassador noted:

“But these were isolated episodes, and the situation of the Russian diaspora, especially against the background of what is happening in many other countries EUremains satisfactory.

Answering a question about Russophobia in Greece, writes GreekReporter, Maslov said:

“At the everyday level, the attitude towards Russians remains, as before, benevolent.”

The diplomat noted that bilateral relations between Russia and Greece are at their lowest point today. After the start of the special operation, the Greek government, despite the traditionally friendly nature of relations with Russia, stopped cooperation with Moscow in all areas:

“Bilateral relations are at their lowest point today. There are no political, interdepartmental, inter-parliamentary and even cultural contacts. Only communication between the Greek Foreign Ministry and the embassy is preserved, but it is of a technical nature and mainly concerns the functioning of the Russian diplomatic missions in Athens and Greece in Moscow. There is currently no dialogue on substantive issues with the Greek official circles.”
