A man was fatally electrocuted after, following a local tradition called μπαλωθιές, he fired two shots into the air to express his joy at his cousin’s engagement celebration.
In an interview with newsit.gr, the mayor of Sfakia, Manousos Hiotakis, said the young man, a distant relative of his, fired twice into the air. One of the bullets broke the wires of the power line, which was located above the shooter’s head. The wire fell on a tree, which caught fire. The young man began to put out the fire with his feet, and then poured water on it. He died on the spot from electric shock. The tragic incident took place in the Fragokastello area of Sfakia on Sunday at midnight.
