All the money goes to a mobile phone: every second Greek bought a smartphone last year

Purchasing a mobile phone has become one of the top spending items for Greeks, with 44% responding that they purchased a device within the previous 12 months. Of the electronic devices that Greeks buy, the mobile phone is the most popular.

When asked “what electronic device did you buy in the last 12 months”, 44% answered a mobile phone, while the average in 18 other countries was 32%. Meanwhile, 22% of Greeks said they had bought a TV in the last 12 months, 17% a computer or laptop, 17% a smartwatch and 15% a tablet.

Internationally, 32% said they bought a mobile phone in the previous 12 months, 15% bought a new TV, 17% bought a computer or laptop, 14% bought a smartwatch and 12% tablets.

Greece is ahead of the 19-country average, according to a study by Focus Bari, ranked 5th in the smartphone market over the past 12 months. Greece’s position in the mobile phone market is second only to that of Mexico and China, where 47% of consumers say they bought a mobile phone in the previous 12 months. In the United Arab Emirates and India, the respective shares are 46% and 45%, followed by Greece with 44%.

Why didn’t Europeans buy new smartphones?

In other European countries, smartphone purchases over the past 12 months have moved at a much lower pace: 36% in Spain, 30% in Italy, 27% in Sweden, 26% in France, 25% in Germany.

The share of Danes and Britons who bought a mobile phone last year is even lower: 23% and 19% respectively.

Price and features are the main criteria for choosing a smartphone

For the Greeks, as for the rest of the citizens, the main criterion for choosing a mobile phone is the price and features of the device, and the design largely follows as a purchase criterion.

Thus, the criteria by which a Greek consumer buys a mobile device are as follows:

  1. It was at a very good price.
  2. It had the features I needed.
  3. This is a brand that I appreciate.
  4. They are easy to use.
  5. It had the ability to connect/integrate with other devices.
  6. He had great design.
  7. It provides privacy/data protection.
  8. This was the latest model.
  9. I liked the color.
  10. It is sustainable/environmentally friendly.

Sustainability seems to play little role when buying a mobile phone, as the prevailing view is that devices that help the planet are more expensive.

However, the importance of environmental protection as a selection criterion for future purchases of electronic devices shows a growing trend both in Greece and internationally.
