Dora Duro, vice-speaker of the Hungarian parliament, said that, in order to avoid major security risks, Ukraine’s accession to NATO is possible only after the approval of such a move by Russia in the format of an agreement.
A representative of the far-right Hungarian party Our Motherland stated this in an interview with a Russian publication Izvestia, emphasizing:
“We do not see any circumstances that would allow us to support the expansion of NATO at the expense of Ukraine. As long as Ukraine’s borders are contested and armed conflict continues, even NATO’s own rules exclude Kiev from joining the alliance. Without the risk of starting a war, Ukraine’s entry is possible only if if Russia approves it in the form of a definite agreement.”
At the same time, Duro did not fail to once again criticize Kyiv for allegedly “oppressing” national minorities:
“The Ukrainian leadership is unwilling to guarantee elementary rights to Hungarians, Romanians, Russians and other minorities in the country, trying to limit their existing rights, especially in the area of language use. In light of increased military assistance, Kiev feels even less need to compromise and guarantee adequate rights to the native Hungarian population of Transcarpathia”.
In her opinion, the Ukrainian authorities could take the “right step” in this direction by giving the Transcarpathian region and other regions territorial autonomy.
Recall that on April 20, during a visit to Kyiv, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the future of Ukraine is in the alliance, and all its members agree with this. Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, expressed outrage at such a statement.
