Crete: Russian woman who knocked down a dog and left is released from custody

A 63-year-old Russian citizen who knocked down a dog in her car on the island of Crete on Maundy Thursday was released on bail after giving evidence to the investigating judge.

A woman must report to the local police station once a month and pay security deposit of 1500 euros. She is also prohibited from leaving the country. brought against her criminal prosecution under the article of a serious crime (!)according to the publication Cretapost on Tuesday.

The 12-year-old dog was injured in the abdomen, paws and head. He underwent surgery and remains in the veterinary clinic. Nothing threatens his life. However, this cannot be said about the life of a motorist … A 63-year-old woman was issued an administrative fine of 45,000 euros for intentionally injuring a pet, under the article on violation of legislation on the protection of pets.

A fine of 200 euros was imposed on the owner of the animal, because the dog was outside without a leash. The owner went to her car to pick up something, and the dog followed her.

It was the owner of the dog who reported the driver to the authorities, claiming that the car deliberately ran over the animal, and this incident was recorded by a surveillance camera. The Russian woman claims that at first she saw the dog, but decided that she had left when she stopped seeing her. The woman was arrested and spent Orthodox Easter behind bars.

As we noted earlier, if a woman hit a man, with minor injuries, she would have paid a much lower fine. But the chances of going to jail after she left the scene of the accident were still high. It is the latter in the criminal code of most countries of the world that is considered a condition that significantly aggravates the offense.

It is noteworthy that the woman was forbidden to leave the country, as the judge is well aware that the payment of such a fine is very problematic for most residents of Greece, and even more so for poor foreigners. And if the judge understands, and the rest understand, why are such incredible fines established?

It is also interesting how many of the fines imposed under this article were actually paid? After all, the above amount is significantly less than the recent fine of 250 thousand euros for a 59-year-old man who threw 5 kittens into the trash, or a fine of 120 thousand euros for a 75-year-old woman for a similar crime, despite the fact that the kittens were not injured … And why do they arrange this comedy? Who benefits?

Almost all motorists, especially those with long experience, were either witnesses or perpetrators of attacks on wild or domestic animals, as well as birds. This happens when animals, mostly cats or dogs, try to cross the road directly in front of a fast moving car. Bird strikes, especially pigeonsare even more common…

Adequate, and such an overwhelming number, drivers try to bypass animals and birds, but this is far from always possible. And what should they do now? After all, such an incident can be interpreted in different ways. In our story, an elderly woman lost sight of a stupid dog, which probably fell into the so-called. “dead zone” and ran into it. I’m not trying to justify the guilty, I’m just analyzing the situation that any motorist can get into.

As a result, without any investigation, trial, lawyers and defense, without the expertise of the traffic police (see reference to “dead zone”) 63-year-old woman sentenced to confiscation of property and lengthy imprisonment. You heard right: after all, those 5 days that the Russian woman spent in the bullpen at Easter can not even be counted. According to the laws of Greece, in the case of a significant debt to the state, the perpetrator can be sent to prison, where he will be charged 15 euros for every day spent behind bars. This law was adopted in 2015, and they are not even thinking of repealing it. This means that in order to “compensate” the amount of 45,000 euros, the woman will have to sell her property, and “serve the rest” in prison. At best 2-3 years, at worst 5-6 years. Similar sentences in Greece are given to rapists and robbers.

Welcome to the new reality…
