Japan: Explosive object thrown at Fumio Kishida (video)

In the city of Wakayama, an object similar to a smoke bomb was thrown at the Prime Minister of Japan.

Fumio Kishida was unharmed. The incident took place on April 15 while the politician was preparing to deliver a campaign speech to voters. While he was in the crowd, an unknown person threw an object that looked like a smoke bomb at him. After a small explosion, clouds of smoke rose from the scene.

The prime minister was not injured and decided not to cancel other speeches at rallies scheduled for Saturday. The suspect was arrested at the scene of the crime by police. This is 24-year-old Ryuji Kimura. His motives are not clear. Fumio Kishida commented:

“We are now holding elections that are very important for Japanese democracy. Each of you plays a central role and must make sure that your voice is heard. With this in mind, I continue to speak at street rallies. Joining forces with all of you, I am determined to bring these important elections to the end.”

The explosion occurred less than a year after mortal wound former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022, the incident also occurred at a campaign rally in the city of Nara. The politician died in the hospital without regaining consciousness.

Involuntarily, another similar incident comes to mind, which still causes a smile. On September 24, 2004, the ex-president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, who at that time served as the prime minister of Ukraine, suffered from an “egg attack”. This happened in Ivano-Frankivsk during the presidential election campaign.

On that day, Yanukovych was scheduled to meet with students of the Vasily Stefanyk Precarpathian National University. At the building of the university, the candidate for the presidency was met by two groups of students who were chanting “Yushchenko!” On video footage taken at the time of the prime minister’s arrival, one can see how an egg thrown by someone gets into it as he exits the bus. Lowering his eyes to his jacket, Yanukovych grabbed his chest and fell. Security immediately picked him up, and the head of government was hospitalized, remembers “Reviewer”.
