Greek Easter wishes before and after Easter

In Greece… exchange Easter wishes like a Greek! Easter wishes are a bit complex and depend on whether they are exchanged before or after the Resurrection of Jesus.

Most often, the Greeks want Καλό Πάσχα! Kahlo Easter! Happy easter! ABOUTfrom Palm Sunday to Holy Wednesday or Holy Thursday.

From Holy Thursday noon to Holy Saturday, before the Resurrection of Jesus at midnight, you will hear Καλή Ανάσταση! Kali Anastasi! Happy Sunday!

When at midnight on Resurrection Saturday the priests take the Holy Fire out of the temple and each one lights his white candle, the priests and the faithful sing with one voice, “Khrιστός Ανέστη εκ νεκρών! Christos Anesti ek nekron! Christ is risen from the dead!”

Families, relatives and friends exchange kisses and wishes: Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ Anesti! – Christ is Risen!

One answers either with Χριστός Ανέστη! or with Aληθώς Aνέστη! Alytos Anesti! – Truly Risen!

If all these wishes are too complicated to keep in mind or voice, just settle for the classic Greek wish for all occasions:

Χρόνια Πολλά! Chronya Polla! – Many years! but of course, after the Resurrection, not before!

If you are a foreigner, the Greeks will appreciate your efforts in Greek anyway.
