Crete: a new record for the export of local products, who is in the lead


According to the data ΕΛΣΤΑΤ2022 ended with a positive sign for Crete’s exports.

Exports, excluding oil products, reached 682.10 million euros and 418,820 tons compared to 615.70 million euros and 415,536 tons in the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 10.8% in value and 0.8% in quantity.

The food and beverage sector, which accounts for 58.8% of all Cretan exports worth €400.9 million, is showing a growth of 14.7%. The chemicals and plastics sector is in second place, with a share of approximately 26.3% of Crete’s total exports and an increase of 11.6%. This is followed by the textile industry and the production of clothing (share of 4.2% and an increase of 10.5%), agricultural equipment (share of 4.1% and a decrease of 12.6%). Machines, mechanisms and devices, as well as building materials and other manufactured goods are exported much less.

IN agri-food sector The value of olive oil reached 274.4 million euros, accounting for 40% of all Cretan exports and 68.5% in the food and beverage category, an increase of 21% compared to the corresponding period last year. Horticulture reached 70.1 million euros down 1.5%, fruit 13.5 million euros down 27.8% and with lower percentages, followed by fish and seafood, dairy products, water category – soft drinks – juices , wine, honey and meat, and its preparation.

Of the non-agri-food sectors, the export of plastic films and packaging, nets for agricultural use and dyes is important.

As far as markets are concerned, main buyers of Cretan products are Italy (26% share), Germany (17.6%), France (6.1%), the Netherlands (5.2%) and Spain (4.9%). The top ten buyers include Poland, the USA, Romania, Bulgaria and the UK.

In the food and beverage sector, the main buyers are Italy with exports reaching 161.8 million euros, Germany with 82.3 million euros, Spain with 18.2 million euros, Poland with 15.4 million euros and Cyprus in fifth place with 12 million euros.

In the Chemicals and Plastics sector, the main buyers are Germany with 24.2 million euros, France with 22.2 million euros, the Netherlands with 13.3 million euros, Spain with 11.7 million euros and finally Italy with 10 .5 million euros.

Thus, according to experts, 2022 was an excellent year for Crete’s exports, decisive for the dynamics of the island’s export performance. Although it initially looked like it would be a difficult year – with the start of the war in Ukraine, the surge in energy and fuel prices, the huge costs of transportation and raw materials – our exporters managed to cope and stimulate the local economy.
