The truck was carrying 181,000 packs of smuggled cigarettes

About 181,000 packs of contraband cigarettes that did not have excise stamps (special consumption tax marks) were found by the Inter-Agency Market Enforcement (DIMEA) team in a vehicle stopped for inspection.

As stated in the relevant message of the Ministry of Development, during the DIMEA checks, “a truck was found that, instead of stopping at a signal from the traffic police, on the contrary, accelerated to avoid the upcoming control. After that, an Attica traffic officer, who was part of the inspector team, followed the car, and after 1 km the chase was completed. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

After a search of the truck, 181,000 packs of contraband cigarettes were found and seized. A preliminary investigation into the incident was conducted by the Attica Security Directorate.

Joint control by the Inter-Ministerial Market Control Group of the Ministry of Development and the Hellenic Police, which aims to combat illegal trade, “continues at an intense pace throughout the country.”
