In Sweden, there were arrests related to the threat of terrorist attacks. Five people suspected of links to Islamist groups were detained at three different locations.
The media were quick to link the police raids to the row over the burning of the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in January. Representatives of the department for the fight against terrorism deny this, but the deputy head of the counter-terrorism unit, Susana Trehorning, admitted that the January events could have provoked the threat of an attack on Sweden.
If we talk about Swedish interests, which suffered significant damage as a result of the burning of the Koran, then this primarily concerns relations with Muslim countries. Turkey, for example, expressed indignation at the action and, as a result, retained its veto on Sweden’s entry into NATO.
Stockholm, however, refused to legislate the public burning of the Koran and other religious symbols. The arrests of the five suspects coincided with a decision by the Swedish judiciary to lift bans on demonstrations linked to the burning of Islam’s holy book, writes euronews.
