World Stray Animal Day: reflections on the situation in Greece

“Society has always mocked animals and will always mock them,” says the president of the animal protection organization I CARE on the occasion of the date celebrated around the world.

Today is World Homeless Animal Day, which was established in 2010. The initiative belonged to animal welfare organizations in the Netherlands. The date is intended to “raise the awareness of the international community about the fate of hundreds of millions of homeless animals, which are estimated to be in deplorable conditions.”

The President of the organization for the protection of animals “NOIAZOMAI” Evi Kalaitzidou (Thessaloniki) characterizes today’s date as a “day of reflection” due to the large number of homeless animals in the country. The expert pointed to problems faced by guardians (owners) of pets. The situation in the municipality of Thessaloniki is estimated to be the worst in the last decade, despite the fact that the largest sums have been spent to overcome it.

In a conversation with APE-MPE journalists on the occasion of the World Homeless Animal Day, Evi Kalaitzidou told about the lack of sterilization, daily feeding and care for homeless animals (as promised by the authorities of Thessaloniki).

The state, if it wanted to solve the problem, would cope with it, just applying the laws they passed. At the moment, however, there is neither order nor morality on the issue of protecting homeless animals, both on the part of the state and on the part of supposedly “animal lovers,” says Evi Kalaitzidou.

The president of the animal protection organization also refers to the previous “good” animal law, adding that the state, instead of improving it, 4039/2012, introduced another the law that reinforces irresponsibilitybecause the anyone can take an animal they find on the street and do whatever they want with it.

Answering the question about some growth animal cruelty and due to the fact that “NOIAZOMAI” made public the incident with a man who trampled a cat to death in the city center, Evi Kalaitzidou emphasizes that “there are no numbers, no statistics are kept. And there are actually many more incidents. It’s just that we will learn about some of them from the Internet (only those that have received publicity).

“Society has always mocked animals and will always mock them, the anger and cowardice of people will always manifest themselves in the weakest. There are very serious violations, which, unfortunately, are not reported, because the police are really not able to respond to so many complaints,” the specialist says.

According to Evi Kalaitzidou, most of the volunteers leave the organization to help homeless animalsbecause “their psyche cannot stand what some, so to speak,” specimens of people” are doing in relation to our smaller brothers.”
