The Greek Ministry of Health has published an announcement drawing the public’s attention to mosquitoes that carry dengue fever, as well as Zika and Chikungunya viruses.
The Ministry sent out a circular to all health authorities in the country with a request to take urgent measures to combat mosquitoes, especially in places of their potential breeding (water bodies, green spaces, etc.).
Health authorities should also ensure that patients, visitors and healthcare workers are protected from mosquito bites, for example by placing mosquito nets on windows and doors, providing repellents, and using air conditioners or fans.
In addition, municipalities are required to take measures to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, clean up the environment, raise public awareness and implement mosquito control projects.
The imminent danger, according to the Ministry of Health, “makes it necessary to take measures to monitor and control mosquitoes, with particular attention and increased surveillance in areas that are potential gateways.”
It is also emphasized that mosquitoes can be easily transported from country to country on planes and ships.
