Tragedy in Tempi: how and where to donate blood for the wounded


The national blood donation system is fully mobilized to ensure optimal treatment for those injured in the Tempi train collision.

Since yesterday in places blood donations line up. The picture of many people who came to the Elpis Hospital (Νοσοκομείο “Ελπίς”) was heartbreaking – citizens of all ages stood patiently and waited for their turn to become a donor. Similar scenes were observed outside the AHEPA clinic when more than 500 citizens, mostly students, many of whom were friends of the wounded, came to donate blood. In Patras, by the evening, about 200 citizens had donated blood at the city’s university general hospital.

Where can you donate blood?
Blood donation continues today in various cities of the country. The Medical School of Athens (Ιατρική Σχολή Αθηνών) is also calling on citizens to become donors in connection with the tragic accident in Tempi. Staff and students who wish to participate can contact the following hospitals today and in the following days:

  1. People’s University Hospital, Blood Donation Department, Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο (08:30 – 16:00).
  2. Attica University Hospital, Αττικό Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο, Department of Blood Donation (08:00 – 15:00).
  3. Aretaio University Hospital, Blood Donation Laboratory, Αρεταίειο Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο (tel. records: 2107286301, 2107286324).

Emergency blood donation in Central Macedonian hospitals

In cooperation with the 3rd and 4th Ministries of Health, the region of Central Macedonia organizes emergency voluntary blood donation at its hospitals, which are run by the two health regions. Citizens of Central Macedonia who can donate blood can come on Thursday 2 March and Friday 3 March to the following hospitals:

  • Papageorgiou Hospital.
  • Papanicolaou Hospital.
  • Mental hospital (Ψυχιατρικό Νοσοκομείο, Λαγκαδά 196).
  • G. Gennimat Hospital (National Defense Street 41)
  • Agios Dimitrios Hospital (Elenis Zografou 2)
  • AHEPA Hospital (S. Kyriakidis 1)
  • Hippocrates Hospital (St. Konstantinoupoleos, 49)
  • Agios Pavlos Hospital (161 National Resistance Street)
  • Theagenio Hospital, (Θεαγένειο, Alex. Simeonidi St. 2). In particular, hospital blood donation service Θεαγένειο announced that it will operate on an emergency basis on Thursday 2/3 and Friday 3/3 from 9:00. until 13:00 and from 17:00 to 19:30, and on Saturday 4/3 and Sunday 5/3 from 10:00. until 13:00.
  • Pieria: Katerinis Hospital (6th km. Katerinis – Arona, DD Neo Keramidi).
  • Imathia: Veria Hospital (Papagos settlement).
  • Naoussa Hospital (Afon Lanaras and F. Pehlivanou 3).
  • Pella: Hospital of Edessa (Terma Egnatia).
  • Giannitsa Hospital (Therma Semertzidis).
  • Residents of Kilkis, Serres and Chalkidiki can donate blood at regular blood donations at hospitals in their area.

Emergency blood donation in Attica

Today, Thursday March 2, on the first floor of the Attic region (Περιφέρειας Αττικής), st. Seagrove, 15-17, from 9:00 to 13:30, an emergency blood collection was organized for the needs of the victims of the tragedy in Tempi.

Donating blood in the municipality of Athens

The Municipality of Athens is also organizing emergency blood donation at municipal clinics and at the Elpis Hospital in cooperation with the new Aretaio Hospital blood donation.

Citizens who wish to help by donating blood can come today, Thursday, March 2, from 10:00 to 15:00 to the following city clinics:

  • 1st city polyclinic (Solonos 78) – phone number 2103626587.
  • 2nd municipal clinic (Fanostenus and Frederico Smith, Neos Kosmos), phone number 2109239865.
  • 5th municipal polyclinic (Sarantaporou 4, Patisia) – appointment phone 2102015510.

Emergency blood donation in the municipalities of Attica

Some municipalities of Attica conduct emergency blood donationto help those in need affected by the tragic train accident. The municipality of Oropou has already announced that it will donate the blood collected during the blood donation scheduled for today, and four other municipalities, among the largest in Attica, have announced that they will organize an emergency blood donation.

  • The municipality of Peristeri organizes blood donations on Friday (March 3), with the assistance of the mobile blood collection station of the Laiko Hospital. The event will take place in the hall “Art and Fine Arts” of the City Hall from 9:00 to 13:30.
  • The Municipality of Chalandri, in cooperation with the blood donation department of the Alexandras General Hospital, calls for blood donations on Saturday (4/3) at the social service building (Papagu str. 7) from 9:00 to 14:00.
  • The Municipality of Ilioupolis has announced that it is conducting blood donations at the Athens Regional General Hospital “Georgios Gennimatas” in cooperation with the hospital’s Blood Donation Center daily from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm.
  • Municipality of Pallini: on Saturday (4/03) at the municipal premises of Pallini (Feidippidou 25A, Eleftherias Square) from 9:00 to 13:00.
