A hard day for the relatives of the victims – identification of bodies begins today (video of the collision)

The bodies of the victims of the Tempi train derailment will be identified today, March 2. At noon, the tragic process will be initiated by the police, in cooperation with the forensic service, as part of the DNA process according to the protocol followed in cases of mass disasters.

After the identification process, the bodies of the dead will be handed over to their relatives. At the same time, the search for missing people and the identification of the victims of the disaster continue. Search and evacuation work continued throughout the night, and today searches are ongoing by rescuers in the third carriage. Rescuers and crane operators are working to move the train carriages so that the search can continue.

Roubini Leontari, the Justice Department medical examiner in charge of the investigation, said 43 bodies had already been autopsied. According to her, the bodies are in very poor condition and most of them are in their 20s and 30s. She added that, in addition to the bodies, there are also bags with individual parts of them, which have not yet been identified. Ms Leontari expressed her concern that the death toll could rise:

“53-54 families gave their DNA and reported missing.”

Friends and relatives are looking for the missing and are doing their best to find them by any means, including through social media posts.

It is worth noting that the identification process is very difficult and painful, and also quite long, so it will probably take several days. Some of the victims are dismembered, so it is extremely difficult to even identify them. There are 4 medical examiners in the hospital and, according to available information, the head of the Athens forensic service.
