Woman with rheumatoid arthritis was given five minutes to vacate her home

Collectors, with the permission of the government, are now throwing insolvent disabled people out of their homes, literally leaving them on the street.

A wheelchair-bound woman lost her home because she couldn’t pay off her mortgage and negotiate with the fund that bought it. Thus, she not only lost her home for 46,000 euros, but they tried to evict her from her house when representatives of the collector broke into her (already former) apartment.

According to the TV channel OPENa 50-year-old woman who has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis since 2016 and used to work as a hairdresser and now receives a very small allowance of about 310 euros per month, has become a victim of debt collectors.

The woman had a mortgage of 90,000 euros, but with the appearance of disability problems, she could not continue to work and pay it off. At the same time, according to her, she tried to negotiate with the fund that bought the loan, but this did not happen because of her low income. As a result, the woman lost her apartment, which is located in Agios Panteleimonas and has an area of about 100 square meters.

Ms Evdokia Papathanasiou described the nightmarish moments she experienced when they tried to take her out of her home. As she explained, while at the house on Friday, she suddenly heard a noise from her door.

“Suddenly I hear how the door is doing “khrach-khratch”, and I was afraid that it could be thieves. Then I heard that they started to beat on the door, – she said. – I asked them, “Who is this?” and then asked them to wait a while so that I could open the doors. I called the woman who helps me and who has the keys to the house.”

The disabled woman went on to say that she saw a man jump from a neighbor onto her balcony and knock on the window to open it.

“I told him: “I can’t open up to you, I’m disabled,” she said. Then the men opened the doors to the apartment, and as soon as they got inside, they opened it and the one who was on the balcony. The men said: “You have five minutes to pack everything and leave.”

The woman reacted and asked these people to give her time so that she could pack her things and leave with dignity. According to the report, not only did this not happen, but these people packed her medicines into one bag, as well as her purse, in order to immediately evict the woman from her home. “They didn’t even let me call. I wanted to go to the toilet and they didn’t give it to me. The woman yelled at me: “They will come and take you away”… didn’t she have a heart?”

The eviction of the woman, as a result, was prevented by both the people who had gathered on the spot and the police officer who intervened, who finally drove the collectors out of the house. “The policeman told them that he could not take me out of the house because I was not a criminal.”
