Greek food in the American market

Greek food producers are stepping up action to expand their presence or enter the US market, seeing significant potential.

The American market is a significant target for 2023 for the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization, President of ΕΛΟΠΥ (Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization) Apostolos Turalias recently stated: “There is potential.” The presence in the US market is a “bet” to further increase the extroversion of Greek food – not only fish, but also meat, wine, halva, tahini and a host of others.

In an effort to further the penetration of Greek fish farming into the American market, ΕΛΟΠΥ has decided to allocate 1 million euros from a total budget of about 3.5 million euros in 2023 to achieve this goal.

Greek meat is also opening up new target markets, including in the US. The National Interprofessional Meat Organization is taking significant steps to advance the export of Greek mutton and lamb in the coming period.

The US market is showing a remarkable growth rate of Greek wine exports in 2022 and remains the first choice as a target country among non-member countries. EU. This is evidenced by export data recently published by the Central Cooperative Union of Viticulture and Wine Products. According to ΚΕΟΣΟΕ, the American market is characterized by the most dynamic growth in the world and fierce competition. Already in 2022, the export of Greek wine increased in value terms by 25.85%, and in quantitative terms – by 10.01%.

There is also an ever-increasing demand for halva and tahini in the US market, notes the company Aφοί Χαΐτογλου, which produces Macedonian halva and Macedonian tahini. Having successfully entered the Walmart chain of stores, the company is now represented in many well-known large supermarkets in the United States.

Greek company Unismack, which makes high-nutrition snacks and crackers, recently made a major move in the US by investing in a new manufacturing facility in Michigan. The CEO of the company Dimitris Stratakis says, quotes CNN Greece:

“The US market is one of the main export destinations for Unismack products with significant growth potential.”

He noted that the Greek company assessed the current prospects after seeing how its products penetrated the US market, and at the same time revealed the lack of local production of the “type” of snacks in which it specializes.
