"On the 1st anniversary of the start of the conflict in Ukraine": joint statement of 4 Balkan movements

Four Balkan anti-imperialist organizations issued a joint statement dedicated to the 1st anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. The statement clarifies the organizations’ common view of the conflict, which they called the “NATO-Russia Conflict on the Territory of Ukraine.”

A year has passed since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and NATO on the territory of Ukraine. The United States, as the leader of NATO, proclaimed its war goals: the integration of Ukraine into NATO and EUthe destruction of Russia as a world power capable of blocking their imperialist expansion to the East“, the statement says.

They need the defeat and dismemberment of Russia in order to subjugate all independent peoples, prevent the stabilization of the emerging multipolar world, and limit China. The Ukrainian pro-Nazi regime serves as NATO’s puppet on the ground.

Russia is facing an existential threat from Ukraine’s inevitable integration into NATO and the deployment of US bases a few hundred kilometers from Moscow. The US and NATO did not feel obligated by their announcement that NATO would not expand eastward. They do not even feel responsible for their signatures to the Minsk agreements, as recent comments by Merkel and Macron have shown. Since 2014, through its proteges in Ukraine, NATO has been waging war against the Russian population in the Donbass. Before the start of the special operation, more than 14 thousand people were killed there. The apartheid regime was imposed on the Russians. Ukraine constantly passed laws that worsened the life of the Russian population.

This situation was unbearable for any independent/sovereign country. When the West arrogantly and without discussion rejected Russian offers of peace and mutual security guarantees in December 2021, military action became Russia’s only option.– emphasize the authors of the statement.

“Russia is now engaged in a complex struggle with an uncertain outcome against virtually the entire military potential of the West. This struggle will judge the future of our world. The people of the Balkans have suffered from the constant interference of Western powers in our internal affairs. We have suffered from the exploitation of our resources, our wealth through the imposed neo-liberal practices of the US, the EU and the IMF.

We know that the victory of the West in Ukraine will allow them to start new wars in the Balkans in order to integrate the rest of the Balkans into the Western system. It is clear that the West wants the problems they provoked by the wars imposed on us in the 1990s to remain unresolved.

The organizations that signed this statement believe that the imperialist expansion and the plundering of the planet by the West must stop once and for all. We need a new international order of equal, independent, sovereign states within the framework of a multipolar world that promotes the peaceful coexistence and development of peoples. That is why the strategic defeat of the Western bloc in Ukraine is necessary”say the authors of the appeal.

“We call on the people of the region to fight:

  • For the defeat of the United States and its allies in the war against Russia and in all the wars they are waging or preparing.
  • Lift illegal Western sanctions against Russia and many other countries.
  • Block the participation of our countries in NATO military adventures. Against the entry of new countries into NATO.
  • For the unilateral withdrawal of our countries from NATO.
  • Drive out American military bases, which are a mechanism for control over our countries and an instrument of aggression against the peoples of the region.
  • For exiting Western mechanisms of economic exploitation“, so the undersigned organizations conclude their joint appeal

The statement was signed by:

  • September 23 Movement Bulgaria
  • New Communist Party of Yugoslavia, Serbia
  • Greek Independence Platform
  • Socialist Workers’ Party of Croatia
