New "family basket" will contain 60 items

A new version of the family and “lean” basket for the period of Great Lent was presented by the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis.

The Ministry of Development announced the replenishment of the consumer basket with new products, and also recalled the imposition of fines by DIMEA on enterprises caught in speculation. According to the Minister of Development, now Retail chains (supermarkets and shops) will be required to display unit prices in capital letters on signs. The ministry gave one month to apply the innovation, after which fines would follow.

In addition, as the Minister of Development said, in the consumer basket 9 product categories have been added, bringing the total from 51 to 60. The following will be added to the existing ones:

• fresh beef,
• pasteurized milk (regular and non-fat),
• white cheese,
• chocolate.

The following changes and the addition of other products will also be made:

• the category of sausages will be divided into two, pork and turkey, so both products must be present in the basket,
• the fresh chicken category will also be split into two parts: whole fresh chicken and fresh chicken pieces, so certain fresh items will now also be included (e.g. legs, chicken breasts, etc.)
• the legume category will be split into three, including chickpeas, lentils, beans.

The development minister clarified, “We don’t want additional categories in the basket because if it overflows, it won’t work.” In fact, he announced that on the website e-katanalotis there are now also brochures with offers from supermarket chains. “We have also prepared our proposal for the Lenten Basket. For the period of Great Lent, in addition to the already existing and mentioned product categories, we add halva, lean salads (spreads) and frozen seafood (at least two positions in each item), so that consumers can put on the table everything that usually consumed on fasting days,” he said.
