Humanitarian action in Athens – GKK to help the homeless

On Thursday morning in the Greek capital, in the historical center, an action of the Greek Red Cross was held to help the homeless in Athens.

As tells CNN Greece, social workers, medical professionals and ΕΕΣ volunteers in the center of Athens held an action to support the most vulnerable – the homeless. From morning until noon, all those in need of such assistance could receive sleeping bags, shoes and clothes, and phone cards. But the main thing is psychological support and first aid. Areti Kentistu, head of ΕΕΣ’s welfare department, said:

“Daily, based on the mapping that has been done since the previous day, ΕΕΣ is developing active outreach activities for our fellow street dwellers so that we can be close to them, aware of our needed services and make an effort for each of them. Professional social workers develop a personalized plan of action and support to help at least some of them get off the streets, become beneficiaries of our services and place them in places designated for the homeless, even in day centers. This is a continuous work that ΕΕΣ continues throughout the year. In total, this year we distributed and delivered humanitarian aid in the form of about 3.5 thousand parcels to 1,680 of our fellow citizens in Athens and Piraeus, Patras and Thessaloniki, in major urban centers.”

Alas, the number of homeless people in the Greek capital has skyrocketed in recent years, and the pandemic has made life even more difficult for people living on the streets. Support actions by ΕΕΣ are extremely important, as homeless citizens, in addition to practical help with clothes, medicines, first aid, sleeping bags and food, find psychological support and care, warm hugs, which are widely opened for them by volunteers.
