A boat carrying at least 32 migrants sank south of Folegandros Island. A large-scale rescue operation is currently underway.
The plastic boat carried an unspecified number of passengers, presumably 32. 12 migrants were lifted on board the rescue boat and taken to Santorini. The search for the missing continues.
According to APE-MPE, due to strong waves, the boat received mechanical damage and sank. There was no life-saving equipment on board, and only two of the twelve rescued had special vests.
The northerly winds of 4 on the Beaufort scale prevail in the maritime area of the rescue operation. Yiannis Plakiotakis, Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, ordered all necessary rescue funds to be sent as soon as he received information about the incident.
The operation involves: a ship and three coast guard vessels, 2 helicopters of the Air Force and the Navy, an S-130 aircraft, 5 ships and private vessels.
