Ukraine agreed to buy Russian gas from Azerbaijan


Ukraine agreed to transit gas from Azerbaijan to Europe as a temporary measure after the expiration of the transit agreement with Russiawrites “Ukrainian Truth”.

Kyiv understands that gas supplies from Azerbaijan will include volumes of Russian gas. However, some Central European countries still rely on Russian gas piped through Ukraine, having won an exception to the European Union's ban on imports of Russian gas, and are interested in continuing its supply.

In particular, as reported by the same Ukrainian edition, Hungary and Russian Gazprom agreed on a possible increase in Russian gas supplies to this European Union state. In 2024, only 6.7 billion cubic meters of Russian gas will enter the country.

According to an Azerbaijani official, EU and Kyiv asked Baku to facilitate negotiations with Russia with the possible option of Azerbaijan purchasing Russian gas for itself in order to free up some of its own gas for export to the EU.

“We understand that the EU needs time to completely abandon Russian gas. And we are taking this step to ease this transition.” – writes “Ukrainian truth» citing a source in the Ukrainian government. The same source added that Ukraine is ready to support this agreement, even if some volumes of Russian gas are mixed with gas volumes from Azerbaijan.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy declined to comment on this issue.
