“Greece is disappearing.” ELSTAT: 56,646 more deaths than births in 2023

Greece is “disappearing” faster and faster, new data shows ELSTAT for 2023, which recorded 56,646 more deaths than births.

Demographics are now the biggest threat to the Greek nation. The study also shows a decrease in the number of church marriages and a significant increase in the number of civil marriages (cohabitation), as well as an increase in the number of divorces.

In particular, the number of births in Greece in 2023 was 71,455 (36,622 boys and 34,833 girls), which is 6.1% less than in 2022 – 76,095 (39,305 boys and 36,790 girls). Data does not include stillbirths, of which there were 432 in 2023, down 3.1% from 446 in 2022.

The death toll was 128,101 (64,898 men and 63,203 women), down 9% from 2022 (140,801), 70,802 men and 69,999 women.

The number of deaths of infants under one year of age increased to 248, increasing the infant mortality rate (deaths of infants under one year of age per 1,000 live births) from 3.1 in 2022 to 3.5 in 2023.

The number of marriages was 40,351 (21,402 religious and 18,949 civil), which is 6.9% less than in 2022, when there were 43,355 marriages (21,381 religious and 21,974 civil).

The number of civil partnerships was 15,069, an increase of 17.4% compared to 12,840 civil partnerships in 2022. The number of cohabitation agreements in 2023 included 262 cohabitation agreements between men and 121 between women.

The divorce rate per 100 marriages is 37.5. The number of divorces was 15,114, which is 4.4% more than in 2022 (14,477 divorces). When it comes to the type of divorce, eight out of ten divorces filed in the last five years are by mutual consent. In 2023, 12,214 divorces were filed by mutual consent (80.8%) and 2,044 adversarial (13.5%), and in 856 cases (5.7%) the type of separation was not declared.

The largest number of divorces among men occurred in the age group of 45-49 years (20.1%), among women – in the age group 40-44 years (21.3%). 66.1% of divorces last year occurred in marriages that lasted 10 years or more (9,990 divorces). Finally, the divorce rate per 100 marriages was 37.5 in 2023, down from 33.4 in 2022, 34.2 in 2021, 41.2 in 2020, and 32.1 in 2019.

It is obvious that the country is experiencing the consequences of the memorandums, which led to demographic, economic and moral collapse.
