OASA: changes to the Attica transport map and call for citizen participation

OASAas a leading organization in the field of urban transport, begins to rethink the transport map of Attica and prepare a new strategic transport plan.

The goal of the organization is to emphasize the multifunctionality of MMM – buses, trolleybuses, metro, trams and electric vehicles. These modes of transport should complement each other, meeting the current transport needs of Athens residents.

The current urban transport network was based on data from travel demand and destination studies conducted in 2009, when social, economic and transport conditions were different in Attica. Therefore, the need to record, update and analyze modern data is absolutely clear.

OASA Investigation Continues: Citizen Participation Required

As representatives of the organization emphasize, to implement this plan the active participation of residents of the capital is extremely important in a large-scale OASA study that is already underway. During it At least 36.6 thousand households, 71.2 thousand metro passengers, as well as visitors to tram, bus and trolleybus stations and trains, ports and airports will be surveyed. This large-scale survey also includes taxi drivers and freight transport companies.

In particular, will be collected questionnairescovering 1% of households in each municipality of Attica in which it will be recorded socio-economic characteristics of residents and their habits in using public transport. Using questionnaires and processing anonymized data, the real demand for all types of public transport will be determined, the needs in new directions will be assessed and studied new trends in urban mobility.

OASA's Assumptions for the Attica Strategic Transport Plan

In mid-October, OASA's proposals for the Attica Strategic Transport Plan will be presented to municipalities at a special event to be held at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. These proposals include not only “standard sidewalks” and bike lanes, but also parking spaces, electric vehicle chargers, micromobility vehicles and more. In addition to public transport, taxis will also be included in the transport map, and specific locations of the squares will also be indicated.

Contactless payment system by bank card in city public transport

As part of this plan, a contactless payment system by bank card is being introduced on all types of transport in the capital. By the end of the year, all passengers will be able to pay for travel using a bank card, mobile phone or digital wallet in automatic machines (composters). The pilot program is currently being tested on Athens International Airport express buses (X93, X95, X96, X97) and data shows that 10% of passengers already use a bank card to board.

The contactless transaction system will be extended to all types of MMMs from Christmas, but this does not mean that a simple “paper” ticket will no longer be available for use.
