Names of weather cataclysms for the period up to 2025

Thodoris Kolidas, Director of the National Meteorological Service EMY, revealed the names of weather phenomena expected until September 2025.

In his post on the X platform, he talked about the cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, which is also reflected in the names, as they convey the characteristics of each country.

For the period from October 2024 to September 2025 list of titles compiled jointly by three meteorological services, was selected and used in alphabetical order. It reflects the linguistic specificity of these countries using Latin letters:

Hurricanes and other storms are named to facilitate communication and improve safety. Nameless storms could cause confusion among meteorologists, rescuers, and the public.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) created a system whereby a list of 21 names is compiled each year, initially excluding the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z. The names are assigned in alphabetical order: the first storm of the season gets an “A” name, the second gets a “B” name, and so on. When the list runs out of names, Greek letters are used (which were originally excluded).

Initially Hurricanes were given female names, but since 1978 male names have been used as well. It is known if If the hurricane was particularly destructive, its name may be “retired” to avoid recalling the tragedy.

It's interesting that Before this system was developed, hurricanes were often named after saints or the places they passed through.
