An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred at midday on Sunday (September 22, 2024) on Mount Athos and was felt especially over a wider area.

According to the automatic solution of the Institute of Geodynamics, the epicenter of the earthquake is located 8 km northwest of Athos (Karyes) and the depth of the source is 12.8 km. Earlier, smaller tremors were recorded, which worried residents of the surrounding areas.

In particular, at 11:47 there was an earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale with an epicenter 10 kilometers southeast of Ouranoupoli and a depth of 12.4 kilometers, as well as an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale at 12:03.

The 4.6 magnitude quake was followed by another 3.8 magnitude quake. There are currently no reports of damage from the quake, but there are concerns that this will not be the end of it. The quake was also felt on Lemnos.
