BRICS+: A Club for the Elite

Malaysia, Türkiye and a dozen other countries are knocking on the door BRICS+hoping to escape Western influence and take a place in the new world economic order.

Why are countries seeking to join BRICS+? In 2024 BRICS has added new members — Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have joined the bloc. Now it’s not just a club of countries that like to trade oil and host conferences. It’s already a serious player, controlling almost half the world’s population, a quarter of world trade and a significant chunk of the oil market. Their GDP is such that even the big guys on Wall Street are scratching their heads, trying to figure out how best to adjust.

South Africa, which hosted the summit last year BRICSconfirmed that more than 40 countries are already queuing to join this prestigious club. By February 2024, 34 countries have officially applied, and another 20 are actively working to be accepted. This means that in a year or two, the bloc will be even bigger, like a good casino that everyone wants to visit.

In the fall of 2024, the whole crowd will gather in Kazan, a Russian city that loves heated discussions and long lunches. On the agenda, of course, is a discussion about who will be the next to get a ticket to the club. Malaysia, which has long been looking away BRICSwill most likely get a place at this meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, returning from Malaysia, has already hinted that the door is open for them, and there was a clear note of approval in his words.

Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, did not hide his enthusiasm. In a Facebook post, he expressed confidence that this partnership will open up new horizons. Of course, who wouldn’t want to increase cooperation in areas such as trade, science, technology, defense and, of course, tourism! Malaysia intends to invest fully.

But Malaysia isn’t the only one who wants to join the club. Thailand also submitted its bid in the summer of 2024. The Thai foreign minister has made no secret of the fact that he has long wanted to join the alliance, like an old friend who has finally received an invitation to a party. And other Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and Vietnam are also trying to keep up.

And here it is Türkiye left everyone surprised. In June 2024, Ankara made a statement that it was ready to join BRICS+perhaps disappointed in the European Union, which still hasn't decided to let them into its ranks. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that Turkey with BRICS negotiations have been going on for a long time, and he rated this block very highly. He especially liked the fact that BRICS unites countries of different cultures and civilizations, which cannot be said about EU.

Why is everyone so eager to get in? BRICS? It's simple. This bloc is a great alternative to the global financial order, where the guys from the West are in charge. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund – these institutions seem too dependent on the US and its allies to many developing countries. But BRICS offers a different model, more fair and attractive to those who are looking for new economic opportunities.

Economic benefits are what pushes everyone into this bloc. Trade between countries BRICS is growing by leaps and bounds. In the last five years alone, trade volume has increased by 56%, and it’s not stopping there. Economic giants like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have added new horsepower to the block engine, giving all participants access to even more resources and markets.

It is not surprising that countries subject to sanctions see BRICS way out of difficult situations. Russia, for example, after the introduction of Western sanctions significantly increased oil and gas exports to China and India, and China, in turn, increased exports of equipment and cars. All this makes BRICS+ a very attractive zone of economic stability.

As a result, the desire of countries to join BRICS The explanation is simple: the opportunity to avoid economic sanctions, gain access to trade and financial benefits, and at the same time maintain sovereignty and independence. BRICS – this is a new world order, without hegemony and dictate, and many want to be part of this project.

Author's opinion: inIt's all natural. Of course, they are tired of endless lectures from the West on how to live, trade and build democracy. And now they are looking for a new haven in the form of BRICS. But, as they say, a new pier does not mean that there will be no storms. All these countries understand perfectly well: economic independence is a complicated thing. BRICS – it is not a magic wand, rather it is an opportunity that offers enormous prospects. We are observing…
