New illumination of the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion (video)

Cult Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion was highlighted on Monday evening during an event attended by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and a concert by the outstanding Greek composer Stavros Xarhakos.

The illumination of the famous temple in southeastern Attica also offers a unique experience to passengers on ships sailing in the area. In a unique fusion of ancient heritage and contemporary art, the Ministry of Culture has taken the initiative to illuminate the iconic Temple of Poseidon in Sounion, as it was done in illumination of the Parthenon in September 2020.

Company METLEN Energy & Metals sponsored the design and implementation of the lighting, as well as the promotional activities for the event, confirming its commitment to the promotion and protection of the cultural heritage of Greece. The lighting is curated by a world-renowned designer Eleftheria Deco, known for her work on the Acropolis and at the opening of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

The new lighting of the Sounio Temple highlights the archaeological and architectural significance of the monument in a unique way, giving it a new dimension. Special attention was paid to ensuring that the visual experience of visitors to the archaeological site during the day is not disturbed. All installation elements and lighting fixtures are positioned in such a way as not to interfere with navigation or cause visual disturbance to visitors. The illumination also offers a unique experience to all passengers on ships sailing to the port of Piraeus or from Piraeus to the islands in the evening and at night.
