Greece raises fees for accommodation of cruise passengers and tourists

Greece on Monday announced an increase in fees for cruise ship passengers landing on the islands of Mykonos and Santorini, as well as accommodation fees for all tourists in general – whether hotels, rooms for rent or short-term rentals through Airbnb and other platforms.

In summer, the collection on these islands will amount to 20 euros per personwhile on other islands it will be significantly lower – 5 eurosThe new fees will be in effect from June 1 to September 30, 2025, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni said. Fees will be reduced in April, May and October up to 12 euros for Santorini and Mykonos and up to 4 euros for the rest of the islands. From November to March the fee will be 4 euros for Mykonos and Santorini and 1 euro for other island destinations.

According to the ministry's calculations, the total income should amount to 50 million eurosA third of the revenue will go to municipalities, another third to the Ministry of Shipping to improve port infrastructure, and the rest to the Ministry of Tourism.

As for short-term rentals, the government will monitor compliance with its standards: “The Ministry of Tourism is working on an operational framework for short-term rentals”– said Minister Olga Kefalogianni, noting that ““performance and safety requirements will be established, as well as a tool for monitoring compliance with these frameworks.”so that this activity develops for the benefit of the entire industry.

Minister of Tourism announced that The climate crisis fee will increase from 0.5 euros to 2 euros in the winter months and from 1.5 euros to 8 euros in the summer months.
She added that climate resilience levy increases by one month for both short-term rentals and hotels and inns, and noted that part of the revenue from the fee will go to the ministry's budget to cover the costs of preventing and recovering from natural disasters and the costs of improving the infrastructure of the tourism product.

Disaster Resilience Levy increases between April and October: by 0.5 euros in one- and two-star hotels and in rooms for rent, rising to 2 euros per night; by 2 euros in three-star hotels, rising to 5 euros; by 3 euros in four-star hotels, reaching 10 euros; by 5 euros in five-star hotels and villas, rising to 15 euros per night. Kefalogianni also noted that direct revenues from tourism are estimated to reach an unprecedented 22 billion euros this year.

P.S. It will be interesting to see ministry expenditure reports for the next year. Where will the money go? If, of course, they give a detailed breakdown and don't keep it secret. This especially concerns the Ministry of the “climate crisis”, a well-known feeding trough for the Mitsotakis-Bakoyannis clan in narrow circles.
