Will the Athens Metro Line Be Extended to Salamis? A Project Changing West Piraeus

Connection to the metro network is what the municipalities of the Second Region of Piraeus want to achieve, as they bid to extend Line 3 to Keratsini, Drapetsona, Perama and Salamina.

In particular, the proposal to cover the western districts of Piraeus with the Blue metro line came after a meeting that took place some time ago, on January 27, 2023, at the Perama City Hall, at the initiative of Mayor Yiannis Lagoudakis.

The meeting was attended by the mayors of Piraeus Yiannis Moralis, Nikias-Ag. Ioannis Rentis Georgios Ioakeimidis, Keratsini-Drapetsonas Christos Vrettakos; Korydallos Nikos Hoursalas and Salamis Georgios Panagopoulos, who decided to demand a metro connection with the Municipality of Piraeus II by extending line 3, which today ends at the Municipal Theatre.

Since then, until June last year, there has been no progress on the issue. And in response to a parliamentary question, Helliniko Metro CEO Nikos Kouretas stated that “This scenario currently has little chance of being realized“.

Mr Kouretas ruled out the possibility of extending the third metro line, pointing out that connecting Keratsini, Drapetsona, Perama and Salamina with the metro would require the creation of a new line, which has not yet been planned.

However, he did not rule out that the project lines will be the leaders in future implementationsif its necessity is documented in the context of the upcoming transport research.

“A metro line like the one mentioned above is currently has not been designed and will require its documentation primarily in the context of the strategic transport study that has already been commissioned OAS and is being prepared– Mr. Kouretas noted. – The research work is in the final stage. And based on the findings, Hellenic Metro intends to proceed with the second phase of the necessary work required for the implementation of the project.”

In addition, Mr. Kuretas' response also The previously planned extension of tram lines in Keratsini, Perama and Salamis is mentioned, according to the results of the first transport study for the development of the Athens metro (2000).

«However, this planning has not progressed due to reactions from local municipalities. The results of the updated OASA transport study in the region are therefore awaited to complete the planning of public transport systems.” said the general director of Helliniko Metro.

We remind you that The last completed metro project was the extension of Line 3 to the Municipal Theatre. First section (Alsos Veiku-Gudis) Line 4 is currently under constructionand the extension of Line 2 to the western suburbs is at the competitive stage – a project that is being bid on by major construction groups.
